With all the gloom and doom surrounding the economy, we need to remind ourselves there are always opportunities, the trick is finding them. Since gas prices are starting to effect consumer driving behavior, many folks are opting to take Staycations…a vacation which are at home or very close to home. This provides a HUGE opportunity for the locally driven radio station. Here’s a quick concept off my cuff:
Denver Scavenger Hunt (or whatever city you broadcast from)
Have the morning show broadcast from a different attraction or location in your city every day for a week. During the show the team will give out clues to their location. The first 20 people to figure out where they are get prizes…family packs to the attraction…lodging for a weekend…a rental car with gas for week. The sell in can be through the location (this one sure way to get listeners to a remote) or also through the prizes at the locations. The interactive tie in is, special hints to listener club subscribers, and a page on the website for the participating attractions with an offer for listeners who live in the state.
You get the idea…think of creative ways to embrace the listeners Staycations, as this a lifestyle change for many. Instead of going on vacations people are making their own home nicer, so it seems more like a vacation year round…so look for advertisers in Gardening, Painting, BBQ/Patio, Spas…any vertical where listeners can have a drastic improvement in their life for less than a typical two week paycheck.
